Tate Modern – The Long Weekend

I happened across this on the weekend out the front of Tate Modern. It is part of their UBS Openings: The Long Weekend.
Nuts!

With the constant rain and intense humidity I’ve been thinking the conference should be called ubiquitous umbrella rather than ubiquitous media. Umbrellas are everywhere. Even cyclists ride with one in one hand and the other on the handbar. Too clever! The air is thick, syrupy and wet. The rain gives a little relief but not much. Aside from my guide book and camera my early purchase of an umbrella quickly became an essential everyday item. Brolly’s over here are cheap and large, which I find curious given the lack of space on the streets and on the train. (Somehow no-one else seems to trip over or poke people with theirs – it must be a learned experience). Most are deep, tightly curved and made of clear or light coloured plastic and they are sold everywhere; from chemists to cafes, from restaurants to big department shops. To prevent dripping umbrellas most places provide a stand outfront with plastic disposable covers. You simply slip the wet brolly into the top of the machine and pull it towards you. The movement sleeves the offending wet plastic and you can safely enter the shop without leaving a drippy path. There was one of these contraptions outside the conference halls and the heaviness of the rain meant that most of us had plastic umbrella sleeves so full of water that they could happily house a goldfish or three. In other places people simply leave their umbrellas in stands like this one in the pic outside my hostel. You simply dock your brolly here and pick up another one if yours has been taken. I’ve done well so far. I left a small one a few days ago and keep picking up much larger ones. It’s a nice system.

…..but when you take a look at the amazing classification system of competition entries for the annual Ute Muster at the upcoming Royal Adelaide Show you’ll have to agree this is an event worthy of a blog post. Allow me to draw your attention to a few of the extra special categories;
- best matched ute and driver
- female owner/driver
- feral
- furthest ute travelled
Needless to say I’ll be there!
[alright.... I'm also going for the blokes with axes, to see Stephanie "The Cannon Lady", the Big Boys Ballet which involves heavy machinery and I have to admit the pig diving has me intrigued.]
