Economy of Contribution and Metadata

Interviews with Professor Scott Lash, Research Director of the Centre for Cultural Studies, Professor Robert Zimmer, Co-Diretcor of Goldsmiths Digital Studios and Head of the Department of Computing, and Goetz Bachmann at Goldsmiths University London and Bernard Stiegler, French philosopher and Director of the Department of Cultural Development at the Centre Georges-Pompidou in Paris.

The interviews were conducted in response to several recent conferences, lectures and colloquiums held at Goldsmiths College that revolved around the Metadata research project at the Centre for Cultural Studies and visiting Professor Bernard Stiegler’s series of talks on the Economy of Contribution.

The interview is divided into two parts.

Speakers included:

Yann Moulier Boutang: a philosopher and economist, teaches economics at the University of Technology of Compiègne in France and is director of the journal Multitudes. Since Fall 2005 he is International Adjunct Professor at the Department of Sociology and at the Fernand Braudel Center of Sate University of New York at Binghamton. He most well-known for his publication ‘From slavery to waged Labour’ published at the Presses Universitaires de Frances which reexamines all forms of bound-labour (indentured servant, colonial slavery, coolies) with special attention to the Caribbean, North America, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, as a means of understanding the role of immigration labour force in industrial societies.

Bernard Stiegler: widely regarded as one of France¹s most eminent philosophers and a Director at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Before taking up the post at the Pompidou Center, he was program director at the International College of Philosophy, Deputy Director General of the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel, then Director General at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM). He is currently professorial fellow at the Centre for Cultural Studies.

Scott Lash: Research Director of the Centre for Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths University London and project Leader in the Goldsmiths Leverhulme Media Research Centre.

This one and a half day workshop was hosted by the Centre for Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths College, London on February 10th/11th 2009. It was organized by Scott Lash (CCS), Bernard Stiegler (Centre Pompidou/CCS), Robert Zimmer (Computing), Nina Wakeford (INCITE, Sociology) and Götz Bachmann (CCS).
