A Quick Primer on Student Information Systems
You can think of the SIS as the place where your institution's academic decisions become official. A department decides a student passed a module; the SIS records it. The exam board confirms an award; the SIS issues the transcript. Someone asks how many students are on a programme; the SIS gives the answer.
For course and grade work, you'll lean on four things above all: how courses and their rules are set up, how the academic calendar controls deadlines, how marks are entered and checked, and how results turn into documents. When you compare platforms, ask each vendor to show you all four with one of your own programmes, not a demo dataset. Bring a real module with resits or optional components, because that's where systems tend to differ most.
You'll also want to know where the record begins. If it starts at application, you won't need to re-enter a student's details when they enrol, and the programme they applied for is the one they're assessed on. If it starts at enrolment, your admissions and registry teams will need a reliable handover between systems, and you should ask how that handover works in practice.
Your Shortlist for Grades and Transcripts
1) Full Fabric
Best for: institutions that want course, grade and transcript management on the same record as admissions.
Start with what your students see. Full Fabric gives each learner a hub where they can follow their own record, and re-registration lets continuing students confirm the next stage of their studies without paper forms. Behind that, your registry manages courses and calendars, records grades and produces transcripts, diplomas and certifications from the same place.
Because Full Fabric's CRM, admissions, commerce and SIS share one data model, you never move a learner from one system to another. If you run short courses that build into bigger awards, stacked learner management keeps those credits together. You also get HESA reporting for UK returns, and you can link Canvas or Blackboard through the API and Turnitin for plagiarism checks.
You'll pay a €12,000 platform fee each year plus a charge per registered student for the SIS. Don't expect finance or HR software; it isn't part of the platform. You do get ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification across everything, which matters when marks and personal data sit side by side, and a REST API with webhooks if you want grades pushed to other systems as they change.
Verdict: your best option if you want a straight line from application to transcript.
2) Oracle Student and PeopleSoft Campus Solutions
Best for: Oracle universities with unusual course structures.
If your courses come in many shapes, Oracle Student's curriculum registry is built for that, with different course lengths, grading schemes, credit types and credentials. You set enrolment, drop and grade due dates in the academic calendar, and students use Student Central and a course scheduler to plan their studies.
Still on PeopleSoft Campus Solutions 9.2? Oracle describes a route to the cloud product. Expect US-centred documentation and no published prices.
If you run continuing education, you'll also like pay-to-enrol billing, learning packages and sponsorship agreements, so short courses can be graded and invoiced in the same place as degrees. Consortia and joint degrees can be set up without reimplementation.
Verdict: a good fit if Oracle already runs your finance and HR, and a harder case to make if it doesn't.
3) Tribal SITS
Best for: UK universities with complex progression rules.
SITS gives you progression and pathway rules, learning outcome mapping and grade point averages alongside traditional methods. You can manage extenuating circumstances from request to appeal, and your students can check an Award Predictor as their results build.
It also produces your HESA, OfS, SLC and Graduate Outcomes returns. If you're an independent provider, Tribal will point you to its EBS product instead.
You'll also find degree apprenticeship tracking from ILR submission to placements, plus engagement and absence monitoring that helps you spot students whose marks may suffer. Tribal says over 60% of UK universities use SITS.
Verdict: your strongest UK-specific choice for assessment and progression, though less useful outside the UK.
4) Classe365
Best for: small providers that want report cards and degree audit without a big bill.
Classe365 handles enrolments, attendance, report cards and degree audit, and you can add an LMS so courses and marks sit together. Parents and students get their own portals and apps, so routine questions about marks and attendance don't have to come through your office.
You pay for the Core module by student numbers and for each extra module once, however many students use it. Check your reporting obligations first, because national returns aren't mentioned.
You'll get 10% off by renewing annually, and the current prices took effect on 1 January 2025. A public API lets you connect other tools if you outgrow the built-in LMS.
Verdict: great value if you don't file statutory returns of any kind.
5) TechnologyOne OneEducation
Best for: universities that want course design, timetabling and exams in one suite.
You get curriculum management, from TechnologyOne's CourseLoop acquisition, plus timetabling, scheduling and exam management, all inside an ERP that also runs finance, HR and payroll. Students reach their timetable and records through the DxP Student portal, which TechnologyOne extended with a student guide in its 26B release.
SaaS+ bundles implementation, support and upgrades. You'll only find it in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
Resource booking helps you reserve rooms and equipment for teaching and exams, and an agentic AI layer runs across the suite. If you only need a student system, a full ERP may be more than you want.
Verdict: worth it if you're replacing several back-office systems at once.
6) Thesis SM
Best for: smaller UK and Canadian institutions.
Thesis SM gives you an academics module with flexible reporting: standard, ad hoc and user-defined. You can design your own workflows, so a grade change or appeal follows your rules and sends the right emails automatically.
It covers HESA, HESES, ILR and UniStats in the UK and T2202 in Canada. Plan for 12 to 24 months to implement.
Open APIs and full CSV export mean you can pull course and grade data into other tools whenever you need it. Thesis SM used to be Unit4 Student Management, and if you're in the US you'll be offered Thesis Elements instead.
Verdict: a dependable choice if you're a smaller regulated institution with limited staff.
