INCITE fosters long term collaborations with industry groups involved in the design, production and use of new technologies.
The menu of projects (to the left) provides more in-depth information into each one.
Some examples of the types of projects and collaborations INCITE has been involved in include:
Sapient has pioneered the use of ethnographic methods in the design of consumer and business products. To extend its user research, Sapient has funded an exloratory research project in the University of Surrey's Department of Sociology on the connections between innovative ethnography, critical cultural theory and design.
Intel Research Council has funded the Department of Sociology to research the relationship between mobility and experiences of place, with particular reference to the use of digital content.
There are currently two graduate researchers, Steve Smith and Gerard Oleksik, at INCITE who are funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and sponsored by Sapient and BBC Music Online.
Steve's project investigates how consumers practice identity and individuality through technologies related to digital photography.
Gerard's project is concerned with the developing practices of music use in the home, in the context of technological innovations such as online music websites, and file swapping over the Internet. The third project is researching the impact and use of digital resources in higher education exploring how students use technology in learning.
Kate Orton-Johnson, sponsored by Sage Publications, successfully completed her PhD in 2004.
